BLTouch + Ender 3 Pro - Probe works but 9-point bed leveling fails

Main Post:

Hello all,

I recently installed a BLTouch to my Ender 3 Pro and flashed the correct firmware (Marlin 2.0 bugfix) and it worked perfectly the first time. My buddy wanted to install a BLTouch (geninue one from Amazon, the same one I have) on his Ender 3 Pro so I reuploaded the firmware to an SD card with the only modifications to the code that I know of being the X,Y probe offsets. After flashing the firmware, the BLTouch works fine when doing the standard homing procedure (G28) but the 9-point bed leveling procedure (G29) fails on the first probe point. The printer goes down until the probe touches the build plate, but it doesn't retract like it normally does, and the screen reverts to the home screen. Since the autohome procedure works just fine, I'm not sure if this is an issue with the BLTouch being faulty.

Here's a video so you can see it in action: https://streamable.com/2vtmb0

Things I've done to try to fix this issue:

  • Restarted the printer
  • Tried to activate the BLTouch manually by pushing it with my finger during the point 1/9 probing
  • Double checked the wiring to make sure that the wires lined up. The red and brown wires are switched around and the Z-axis endstop switch is correctly connected to the BLTouch white/black wires.
  • Reset the EPROM
  • Reflashed the same software by renaming FIRMWARE.CUR to firmware.bin
  • Went through the code and tried to idenitfy an anomalies to the best of my ability (I do have a strong background in ardunio)

Currently, I'm trying to find a way to extract the firmware from my Ender 3 and use it on my buddy's, but I haven't gotten that far. AVRDUDE seems to be the move but I still don't quite understand how it works. The reason being, it's been a few months since I flashed Marlin onto my printer during my BLTouch install, so the code may have been changed and I may have forgotten what I had changed. It'd be far easier if I could simply have this problem diagnosed and fixed without using my Ender 3's software.

Has anyone had this issue?

Will this auto leveling bed sensor works with glass?

Main Post:

Hey, i got a anet a8 and i was wondering if i should get this sensor for it - https://www.ebay.com/itm/M18-8mm-DC-5V-NPN-NO-LJ18A3-8-Z-BX-5V-300mA-Inductive-Proximity-Sensor-Switch/292326126520?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I have my aluminum heating bed, a glass that is 4mm thick.

will this sensor detect the aluminum heating bed? or do i need aluminuim foil under it? can i just plug the sensor to the z-endstop switch since its 5v sensor?

Top Comment:

Probably not. Inductive sensors like this typically trigger on aluminum at about half their rated distance (closer to 40% iirc). So your 4mm glass is likely too thick for this to trigger against the aluminum underneath.

Does Pod 3 Cover works with deep bed frame (only 2" of bed visible)?

Main Post:

Considering buying one for Black Friday sales. I've been looking at videos but still unsure how to water tube is set in relative to the bed itself.

I have king size bed. My bed frame is a "box" type with some depth. After I lower my bed into the frame, there's only about 2" of the top part of bed accessible.

Top Comment:

It'll be fine. My frame is similar.

I made a new bed scraper that works better then all the ones I have downloaded.

Top Comment: I get worried using metal scrapers across those dimples, possibly scraping off the surface. The plastic scrapers have 3D printed has never had an issue knocking off pieces, and I use glue stick on my plate which makes a solid adhesion
